Year 5 History practice (during class time).
Wednesday - Music performance (class time)
Thursday - History practice (class time)
History Performance: Children are practicing their acting and starting to organise costumes. They need to think about something they could wear to suit their character.
Some children are using plastic tablecloths to make costumes. (See above) Others are making them at home, or using their own clothes in a modified way. It depends on their character.
I have made a simple pattern for a dress, using a tunic style with a 'ribbon gathered' apron and a diamond shaped part that goes over the neck. If children need a dress for their costume and would like to try making their own, they need to bring in 2 plastic table cloths and a roll of ribbon and I can help them make a dress.
(If they don't work out, you could get an adult gathered skirt, pin it up, and wear a blouse etc.)
For other costumes, see what clothing you have around home that could be modified or used as is. We don't want to make it a burden for anyone. You can also access cheap sheeting from op shops if you are handy with a sewing machine.

Literacy and Numeracy Week and BOOK FAIR this week
The Book Fair will be on this week. Books will be available for viewing from Tuesday afternoon onwards. (Our class will also have an opportunity to view the books as a class at 9:00 am on Wednesday)
Children are able to write a wish list that they can bring home. Books can be ordered before and after school. (Payment is required with orders.) Some items are available for purchase on the day. (Stationery, posters and bargain packs.)
BOOK WEEK (last week)
We had a very successful Book Week! It was beautiful to see our class reading the books they had made, to their little buddies. The happiness on their faces proved all the hard work was worthwhile.
The parade went very well, with some upbeat music and an opportunity to walk and dance in front of the other classes in the school. Thanks for taking the time to find and make such excellent costumes!
Many children also enjoyed a trip down memory lane, as I brought in 'Pete Pelican', our class mascot, from their Reception years. I had kept many books of photos and stories about how families spent time with Pete Pelican. We had pictures of him going on helicopter rides, meeting famous Crows players, swimming in pools, going on boats and motor bikes to name a few! Many Year 5 children want to continue the tradition of having a class mascot after viewing these books.
MITIOG - The children were very curious and engaged during the 2 days of activities. We have covered the topics of: God's loving plan and creation, body systems, reproductive system, stages of development in babies, puberty, and menstruation, so hopefully they will have many questions to ask you. Lucy and I are hoping to do another session to do more on the topics of hygiene, developing responsibility and peer pressure during puberty.
Sports Uniforms Update - After speaking with some parents, I have decided to leave Sports Uniforms as WEDNESDAY and FRIDAY. On Friday, the children were involved in Open Morning by participating in a special Art lesson. We painted some Lenten crosses and made urban 'Cityscapes' with fireworks behind. Photos will be posted when completed.
Mindsets:
On Tuesday, Marie and I presented a staff meeting about 'Mindsets'. There are 'fixed' mindsets and 'growth' mindsets'. What we believe about our own ability affects how we learn. IQ is not fixed, but can change. Researchers now have evidence that through self belief, hard work and persistence with difficult tasks, more connections are formed in the brain. The brain changes physically through practice and hard work. It is like a muscle that needs exercise to work well.
I highly recommend this Ted Talk as it explains Mindsets and gives hope to many students who do not believe in their ability to learn or be smart! Think about the process of learning and value the things you learn along the way, rather than how smart you want to look and feel. For parents and teachers, the nature of praise is very important. It is helpful to be specific in our praise and focus on effort, persistence and resilience, rather than telling a child how good or smart they are.

Reminder: Don't forget to start collecting those giant cardboard boxes to bring in early next term for our sleepover. (Children will bring them in flat and make their structures at school with their friends) Teachers are meeting this week to discuss the sleep-over. We thank those parents who have offered support and will notify you soon if we need your help. Thanks!

TERM 1 Week 5 2014
This week was a welcome relief from the extremes of heat and then flooding rain. This gave us a chance to go for a lake walk and do some more cooking. The aroma of freshly cooked muffins led to a few hopeful faces from other classes appearing at our kitchen door! The 'Masterchef' boys did a good job of 'licking the bowl' too!
The children have also made some special boxes of 'Wise Words'. In these boxes are quotes they have chosen from the Bible, parents, friends or other influential people. I will post some pictures of these soon!
We also watched the Sprints trials on Friday. Most of our class had a go and fingers crossed that some may be chosen for these events. Good luck everyone!

(A note about MITIOG was sent out in the middle of Term 2)
In Appreciation....
Vinnies- Thanks for sending in the food for Vinnies.
We filled up over 1/2 a cage trailer full of food!
Thanks also to the people who donated money or time to helping a parent in need in Room 21. Your gesture of support was most appreciated.
Thanks also to Emma, who did the beautiful flower arrangement~!
SKYPE:
In Term 2, we had a long Skype video chat with an online counsellor from KidsHelpline.
Phone 1800 55 1800 all hours
If you want to have a look at what they offer, here is the website:
http://www.kidshelp.com.au/
The children could see the counsellor on the Smartboard, and the counsellor could see us. The counsellor spoke 'live' with the children about the topic of "WORRY".
Children were given a helpline number that they can call
24 hours a day. It can be for any reason and does not have to be an emergency!
A large amount of discussion also took place after the SKYPE session, and it was amazing how they opened up and talked about their concerns. I hope they felt it was useful. Our student counsellor, Marie, came into our class during the session and also helped to support the children after the chat. We realised the importance of setting aside time to talk to children about their worries.
COOKING - Week 9
12 students baked some yummy chocolate chip muffins for us! They did a great job.
WORKING BEE: Thanks to the people who came and helped at the school working bee last weekend! We painted some benches, planted some shrubs, pruned some roses and moved some bark.

(Tuesday will be normal uniform, unless there are special activities planned) Some students are also involved in Fitness Club and Glee, so can also wear them on these days if needed.

(We won't pressure anyone to do anything but would love some new members and ideas!)
Thursday - I will be out of the classroom on Wednesday and Thursday due to a PD day.

HISTORY - PERFORMANCE:
This term, the Year 5's will be preparing for a Colonial History Performance on Tuesday of Week 10. You are welcome to attend! (Due to this event, our previous History project may need an extension, so I will keep you informed.) This performance will also involve a large Design and Technology component as children make props for the performance. (Other Design and Technology goals, (time permitting) will be to make a moving vehicle - rubber band power/ wind power / or using simple machines.
COMMONWEALTH GAMES:
MATHS- Teachers attended a Maths Day on Monday, which explained the importance of providing open-ended activities, collaborative tasks and investigative approaches. This term, our focus will be revising division, fractions and decimals and there will be a theme of 'Measurement'. (Length, perimeter, area, volume, capacity, mass, time, temperature, angles, etc..)
ENGLISH- We will be making a buddy book for Book Week. We will also be looking at writing Information Reports, Procedural Texts, Descriptions and some more Poetry. Our focus in Spelling will be on plurals. In Grammar, we will be continuing our work with Roma on noun and verb groups and learning to create compound and complex sentences that are descriptive and interesting to read. Punctuation and editing skills will be another focus. In Reading Comprehension, we will be revising comprehension strategies of: Visualising, Questioning, Predicting, Prior Knowledge, Connections, Inferring, Synthesising, Summarising etc.
COMMONWEALTH GAMES:
Other exciting events include our Commonwealth Games activities, which will be held during Weeks 2 and 3 each day. We will also have a medal ceremony each morning from 8:50 - 9:00am.
There will be sporting activities relating to the Commonwealth Games each day (for a half an hour to an hour). All the Year 4 and 5 classes will be involved and the children will be mixed between different classes. We hope they enjoy the activities and that they experience a sense of unity and pride in their 'countries' as they compete.

HEALTH: We are doing Child Protection again this term with Room 20. We will also be doing fitness lessons using ideas from the Bluearth website.
Cybersafety:
Could I draw your attention to a good website to teach children about being safe online? It is:http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/Kids.aspx
This term we will be doing some more work on keeping safe online. This will reinforce the information given last term. Hopefully we can work together to make kids more aware of appropriate Internet behaviour, safety issues and their responsibilities.
OTHER SUBJECTS:
Students will have 5 more weeks of specialist SCIENCE lessons.
They continue to have MUSIC, PE and ITALIAN and also now have ART until the end of the year.

Brain projects - Well done to the students on their Brain projects. We have learnt many things about how the brain learns. PROJECT COMPASSION - On Friday we held our CARITAS Project Compassion Stall. The children came up with the fund raising idea of a ping-pong game. They worked in teams to create the game, organised the resources, planned a timetable of helpers, made posters and delivered them to all the classes. Then they gave up their recess and lunch times on Friday to 'man' the stall. They raised over $100. We had lots of enthusiasm and we still had prizes and lollies left over so they will try to run the game again if permitted. I was most impressed with them all! Thanks again to all the people who donated cash, lollies and items!

TERM 1 Week 9 2014
Library Walk Medical Form- Children need to have this back to school on Monday in order to attend the walk. We apologise for the late distribution of these forms! Thanks to Elada and Cindy for walking with us. We will leave around 11:45 am. The session starts at 1:00 pm at Tea Tree Gully Library and we should return around 3:15 pm. It may be possible that we could be a bit later, depending on the time it takes for us to walk the distance.
(If you offered to help but don't have a current volunteer status we thank you for your generous offer of support. If you would like to update your status, please see the front office and hopefully you can join us next time.)
BULLY BUSTING DAY - Thanks to those that were able to attend our Liturgy and watch the children do their Good Samaritan play. It meant a lot to the children to have you there!
For Bully Busting Day, Rooms 19, 20 and 21 children worked together to do a variety of activities to increase awareness of bullying, the role of bystanders and strategies to deal with bullying behaviours.
Our whole school theme was 'The Golden Rule' : Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Jody organised for each class to paint a letter and we put them all together on our fence near the courts.

This week, many children also attempted the SAPSASA trials for long jump, high jump and the 800 metres race. Good luck to those who had a go!
Religion:
Last week was such a very busy one for us with Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and our Year Level Mass. For Shrove Tuesday, we ate pancakes, participated in pancake tossing relays as well as a pancake eating competition between the Year 4/5 classes. We also had a Year 5 liturgy for Ash Wednesday and on Thursday, the children participated in a Year 5 Mass with Father Manu. Open Morning:

Thanks!

"RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS WEEK"
Monday - Parent Teacher Evening - Room 19 at 6:30 pm.
I look forward to meeting you if you are able to make it.
Wednesday - WRAPPER FREE WEDNESDAY
Friday - Prayer Cafe - 9:00 am in Science Room on Fridays now. All welcome.
The children have settled in very well and are trying hard to do good work. They have had to do a number of 'Pre-Tests' in the first couple of weeks, but a more normal routine of work will soon follow.
Thanks to Kain and his dad for bringing in their guinea pig to share with the class!
What's been happening with ICT?
These are the programs we have started in the last 2 weeks:
XtraMath- The children are participating enthusiastically in this. I hope it helps to increase their fluency and confidence with Maths.
Bitstripsforschools - Children are experimenting and having fun with this site at the moment. They will be set assignments to do once they are familiar with the features of the program. Bitstrips is one of the favourites!
Kidblog- Children are learning how to use a blog, write a post and leave comments. We will be using this blog later during Writing Development lessons. Students will be asked to post a favourite sentence from their writing and peers will comment on positive aspects that they notice in the writing. (For example: the way someone uses descriptive writing, or their use of punctuation.) I also comment on their writing and give feedback. Last year, I found this to be highly motivational and it significantly improved their writing and editing skills.
Storybird: Many students have already published and printed a book using 'Storybird'. The depth of thinking in some of these is evident. It is a website that all children can participate in and feel successful at writing. Children can also comment on each others' books which is motivational too!
'Improve' website: (includes Naplan tests) - Most people have been able to get onto the website but for those that are experiencing difficulty, I emailed the website hosts and asked if they could let me know of any possible problems that could be causing this difficulty. They recommended using Chrome or Firefox rather than Internet Explorer 11. This fix has worked for some people.
Studyladder: Some children started using this today (Friday). The rest will probably get a chance on Tuesday when we have LAPTOP time again.
Wednesday - WRAPPER FREE WEDNESDAY
Friday - Prayer Cafe - 9:00 am in Science Room on Fridays now. All welcome.

Chuppa Chup spider stall: Students worked hard over 2 weeks to make the Chuppa Chup spiders to sell last Thursday. They raised over $60 for charity. Students have also made muffins over the last 2 weeks and these were donated to an Op Shop for their cafe and community outreach program. We are focusing on awareness for the less fortunate in our community this term. It is pleasing to see the joy they are feeling when helping others!

Thanks to the parents who helped us on the Market excursion: Jane (Zoe's mum), Lisa (Abbie's mum), Lisa (Breanna G's mum) and Paula (Zak's mum). We were very grateful for your generous time and assistance!
What's on this week?
Special Request: If you could find 20 minutes, we would be very appreciative if you could please fill in the survey sent to you via email last week. Joe would like as many parents as possible to complete this survey so that he gets a clear picture of where we need to direct our energy at school. (Your identity is kept anonymous.) We have surveyed some students and all the teachers, but parent input is very important to give us a balanced opinion. This is a good chance to have your say. Thanks for your help!

CAMP
Camp was a huge success! The weather was perfect too!
Thanks to all the children and parent helpers who participated with such enthusiasm.
Some of the activities included:
- high ropes
- giant swing
- archery
- group problem solving tasks ( They called them 'Initiatives')
- orienteering with compasses
- wildlife viewing
- 4 hour river walk - children made a shelter out of sticks, rocks, leaves etc.
- ochre face painting,
- obstacles - crossing a river using a tree trunk,
- campfire cooked food, (including a delicious banana, chocolate and marshmallow desert!)
- talent show
- The ultimate warrior challenge - children had to do a series of activities: 10 burpies, a crab walk, tennis ball spin, spider walk, 50 skips, eat a dry weetbix, drink a glass of water, answer some times tables, and then recite the Hail Mary. Many children attempted the challenge and it was fun watching them!
- playing with LU-LU the puppy
- star gazing and learning about the solar system
- Torchlight game where children were put into groups and had to search the campgrounds for some of the staff leaders in the dark. Each staff member had a different name - e.g.) Bob the Builder. It took them 1/2 hour to find Bob, who was hiding in a tree! They LOVED it!!
In all activities, our goal was to step outside our comfort zone a little and see what we could achieve. People were able to complete the challenges to different degrees, and they were congratulated on the courage and effort shown. Everyone, without exception, accepted the challenges and did it to the best of their ability. They were also asked NOT to compare what they did with others as different people are challenged by different things. I hope that all children have come home feeling excited about the experiences that they participated in.
Special thanks to Andrew (Daniel's dad) and Lisa (Breanna's mum) for helping to run the activities and supporting the children in all aspects of camp life. Without their help, we could not have done it!
PHOTOS
If your child would like some photos of the camp, I will put them on the H drive at school. They can copy photos onto their usb to show you. I have put a few 'faceless' ones onto the blog under the 'photos' tab at the top. Unfortunately we were assigned to teams of 11 - 15 children, so I do not have photos of everyone in all activities, but some other teachers may have.
THIS WEEK:

Assembly
Our class hosted the assembly this week and the children ran it independently. I was very pleased with their teamwork, responsibility and co-operation. Well done!
I would especially like to thank Georgia D for organising the assembly agenda and running the assembly program for us! Also Georgia A for her lead role in the play, and Kayla for making up the story.
Kayla made up a story about changing your thinking and actions when upset. The students that acted and sang did a great job of engaging the audience. We had many laughs, and lots of people sang along with us. Great work everyone!
This week is LITERACY and NUMERACY week.
On Monday, children contributed Maths Ideas to a Cloth Banner "Graffiti Wall" in the Green Room Shelter area. I was very pleased with the result. We had many different forms of Mathematics represented! See Photos tab at the top of the blog for some pictures.
Thursday lunchtime- For Numeracy week, I organised a
"GRAND DESIGNS" competition for the school. We had close to 100 children come to our class and they loved making structures out of pyramids and prisms etc. They used straws, pipecleaners, rolled up newspaper, polyhedrons, magnetic rods and balls etc....
See the photos tab for a couple of examples.

This week, I aim to do some more cooking and/or a Science Experiment.
I am also planning some Christmas Craft for the children starting in week 6 or 7. You are most welcome to come in and join us. More info soon!

Week 7 T3
Week 6
Children had a dress up day for book week, which finished with a whole school parade and a performance from the Wakakirri participants.
The Book Fair went well, with a huge response to the book display.
Many enjoyed the disco on Friday night and it was great to see such a large number of children from our class attending and participating with good spirit.
Children also bought popcorn balls on Friday to support charity.
Week 5
We all enjoyed the Wakakirri performance, and wish the Year 7's all the best! (We were lucky with the weather and walked up without being rained on!)
We also celebrated Mass in Week 5.
Some students in our class made ham bakes for a lunch snack on Friday. They did a great job.
Have a look at the recipe page if you want to try it.

Australian Maths Competition: Week 3 we had over 1/3 of our class participate in the Australian Maths Competition! I was very pleased with all those that had a go. Once results come back, they will be announced at a future assembly.
Congratulations to Emma for winning the Maths Mastermind Competition last week too!
MITIOG
Made in the Image of God. (MITIOG)
In Term 2 we discussed human reproduction, changes in puberty and relationships. Your children may have some questions to ask you to clarify their understanding.
EXCURSION to NAWMA on MONDAY 18th June:

Welcome back- 4 girls in our class went on a music tour and did very well. Congratulations to all who participated!
Storybird:
Children have been emailed a link, login and password so they can access Storybird, which is an online story generating program. Most children have already made many books and we are looking forward to reading more entertaining stories!
Our settings are private, but still remember not to use full names, pictures of yourself, or give identifying details of your location etc.
On Monday of Week 6 a group of girls in our class decided to sell cupcakes for the Kidney Foundation to show support for one of our dads. The girls baked cupcakes on a Sunday, brought them to school and they made $111.00
What a fantastic, caring gesture. Well done girls!!
Our previous excursion to the Art Gallery and Migration Museum:
Thursday May 3rd, Term 2, Week 2.
The children were very moved by the War Memorial on Kintore Street. They went inside and were surprised how many people had lost their lives in war. Often the soldiers were not too much older than them.
- Maths Mastermind Competition - This opportunity will be available in each fortnightly newsletter.
- Australian Maths Competition. Entries are now closed for this event. We had over 80 children register, so well done if you decided to give it a go. More information will come out in the future.
- FUNDRAISING On Tuesday 20th March, we sold old toys and books to raise money for Project Compassion. Thanks so much for your support. We raised over $230 for communities in need!
In Week 7 we made muffins for the Open Morning at school. YUM!
- I was very pleased to see some children volunteer to give up their lunchtime play to help me clean up!
- During LENT we are trying to give up time, money or other things, to help us focus on changing and growing, to become more like Jesus. Many children have been very generous, by helping others, or giving up their spare change for our Project Compassion box.
